While I generally love your posts, I must say, also being born in South Africa, being a victim of crime and having a ton of family and friends living there still – that this post seems to undermine the actual state of the country itself. It has one of the highest crime rates in the world (average of 50 murders a day). While yes, most tourists visit and have no issues, I think it’s naive to say it’s dangerous to walk at night anywhere in the world. There are many places in the world where safety is hardly a concern and South Africa is definitely not one of them. It’s a beautiful country and should be explored, but visitors should be aware that crime is a huge factor there.

Hi Remy, thanks for sharing your view. Since I’ve only been living there for a couple of years, that’s why I had a local create this guest post to share what her view is of the country. I do agree that it should be explored, but visitors should do their research before visiting and understand the climate of crime, but that it’s also not all bad!

Though I appreciate your advice here you are ignoring readily available data when you seem to be attempting to compare the safety of travel in South Africa with “any big city”. South Africa has a crime rate about 8 times higher than the USA, which is itself about 10 times higher than most EU countries. So telling prospective travelers to South Africa that just a few precautions will make them safe simply flies in the face of reality.

South Africa is very dangerous, objectively, way more dangerous than anyplace most travelers will have ever been.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing. This post was contributed by a South African local to give her perspective on safety.

Welcome to Wadi Rum, Jordan — the red desert wonderland that feels like another planet. 🌌

From racing through the dunes on a 4x4 tour, to sleeping under the stars in a Martian-style tent 🛖✨, to soaring over the landscape in a hot air balloon at sunrise 🎈— this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Add Wadi Rum to your bucket list — you won’t believe it’s real until you see it.

Back in Jordan for the fourth time, and it continues to inspire me just as much as it did on my first visit in 2012! 🐪

Jordan remains one of my all-time favorite destinations thanks to its incredible diversity and rich cultural experiences.

From exploring the ancient city of Petra and floating in the healing waters of the Dead Sea, to discovering the vibrant streets of Amman, sleeping under the stars in the Wadi Rum desert, and scuba diving in the crystal-clear Red Sea in Aqaba—every journey here offers something unforgettable.

One experience I always recommend (and can’t wait to do again) is canyoning the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib.

There’s truly no place like Jordan. 🇯🇴✨

I’ve stamped my passport in some pretty incredible places, but nothing has changed me the way motherhood has. Oliver, being your mama is the most beautiful, joy-filled adventure I’ve ever known—and the one I’m most grateful for. Happy Mother’s Day to the journey that matters most.
